Step 2: Build more power generation immediately
Texas is experiencing rapid growth in both population and industry, driving an increased demand for electricity. Many areas served by Entergy Texas are seeing top-tier growth, with cities like Conroe and The Woodlands leading the charge. Southeast Texas, in particular, is becoming a national hotspot for industrial expansion, positioning the region for significant economic opportunities. However, this growth requires a reliable and growing power supply.
To meet these rising demands, Entergy Texas has already made strides with new power generation projects, such as the opening of a 993-megawatt natural gas plant in Montgomery County and the 150-MW Umbriel Solar facility in Polk County. We acquired the Hardin County Peaking Facility to address a need for modern dispatchable, flexible capacity and energy, and we are building the Orange County Advanced Power Station, a project underway next to Entergy Texas’ Sabine Power Plant in Orange. At full capacity, the combined-cycle power plant will be capable of producing 1,215 megawatts of electricity per year, which is enough to power 230,000 homes. While these efforts have helped, they’re not enough to cover future needs.
Based on the latest projections, Entergy Texas will need an additional 1,200 MW by 2025 and as much as 1,600 MW by 2028—totaling a 40% increase in power capacity. The six-step Southeast Texas Energy Plan initiative aims to add the 1,600 MW of new generation to the Entergy Texas power grid by 2028, utilizing a mix of traditional and renewable energy sources. The plan also includes upgrades to the transmission infrastructure and enhancements to ensure the grid can withstand extreme weather, all while keeping rates affordable for customers.
By investing in this comprehensive energy plan, Entergy Texas is preparing to support the region’s continued growth and ensure a bright energy future for Southeast Texas.
